Is it possible for NON-SLASH FICS to be good?

Have you every encountered a NON-SLASH real-person fanfic that wasn't just Mary-Sueish/ "this is my secret fantasy with the celebrity" type of thing? i'm thinking U2 fandom in particular, but if you have experiences from other fandoms, please share :)
